The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) announced a new collaboration with King & Prince Seafood today. King & Prince is a subsidiary of Nissui, the world's largest producer of seafood, and sells primarily to foodservice accounts. The partnership, similar to others that the WWF has initiated with Sysco, Kroger, Supervalu and Giant Eagle among other, will assess K&P's sourcing and develop a wild-caught seafood sourcing strategy. The one-year project began August 1, 2010.
WWF will undertake assessments of King & Prince's top 20 wild-caught source species and then use that information to develop a sustainable sourcing strategy that will drive the company's seafood purchases. This includes evaluating Marine Stewardship Council certification for wild species. WWF will also work closely with King & Prince to determine how the company and its suppliers can engage in some of the relevant WWF fishery improvement projects currently underway.
'In order to achieve our conservation objectives for sustainable seafood, we need to engage leading companies like King & Prince in the process,' said Bill Fox, vice president of WWF's fisheries program. 'Their commitment to sourcing wild caught seafood more sustainably demonstrates the business value of protecting ecosystems and ensuring the availability of seafood to meet rising consumer demand.'
Fishing is the principal livelihood for over 200 million people around the world and the primary source of protein for about 950 million people. Yet since the 1950s, it is estimated that over 75% of the marine fish stocks are now either fully exploited or overfished. The world's oceans and the marine life they sustain are at risk.
'This collaboration with an internationally recognized expert NGO like WWF is an important step to accelerate and validate our ongoing efforts in safeguarding the sustainability of our raw material supplies, which is a non-negotiable aspect in our customer service,' said Volker Kuntzsch, President of King & Prince.
King & Prince and WWF will work in tandem to develop and implement a comprehensive wild-caught seafood sourcing strategy based on the initial assessment of K&P's supply matrix.

With the recent Gulf oil spill, there are many questions and speculations about seafood. King & Prince Seafood wants to reassure our valued customers that the spill will not affect our seafood supply nor our product quality. Along with the rest of the industry, we support any and all efforts to quickly, efficiently and respectfully clean up the oil for the future benefit of the ocean, surrounding lands and anyone directly impacted.
Almost all of King & Prince’s seafood is obtained through our global sourcing. When combined with strict quality control procedures and safety standards that exceed federal regulations, you can trust we will continue our 60 years of successfully delivering flavorful, great-tasting seafood products. From start to finish, we will do everything to ensure our products meet operator and patron experiences every time.
Broader industry stats provided by the National Fisheries Institute will also help put the situation into further perspective:
- Only 2% of the seafood most Americans consume is harvested from the Gulf.
- Louisiana produces about 1% of the seafood Americans eat.
- About 83% of the seafood consumed in the United States comes from overseas.
- Shrimp are the most popular seafood Americans eat, but only 4% come from Louisiana, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration numbers from 2008; NOAA further explains that, of shrimp consumed in the USA, 90% comes from overseas, mostly Thailand, Indonesia, Ecuador, China and Vietnam.
- Almost all the oysters Americans eat are harvested in the U.S., 67% in the waters off the Gulf states.
Since King & Prince offers such a broad product portfolio, we’d like to further offer specific and more clarifying information on each area:
- Fish (Pollock/Cod/Halibut/Salmon/Whiting) – no immediate or long-term impact; harvest from the Bering sea, Alaska, Canada, north Atlantic and Chile.
- Domestic oyster – no 2010 impact expected; source from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, and through our global supply we have alternative options.
- Crab – no immediate or long-term impact; source crab meat from overseas.
- Crawfish – no immediate or long-term impact; source crawfish meat from overseas.
- Shrimp – minimal 2010 impact on supplies; shortages domestically will likely affect global shrimp pricing.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss further, please contact Mike Tigani, Director of Marketing at 800.841.0205. We appreciate your continued business with King & Prince Seafood.
